Ghosts and Goblins

Halloween is definitely in the air here at Peninsula Community Library.  There are spiders climbing up the wall and ghosts peeking out from the shelves.  It is our favorite time of year.  Our annual Haunted Library and Pumpkin Walk, co-sponsored by the Old Mission Peninsula School PTO, happens this Saturday, October 27 from 6:30 to 8 PM. Enjoy the haunted library and activities in the gym.  We will line up for a pumpkin lit walk through the woods at 7:20, culminating in not too scary stories told by Witch Wendy in the outdoor amphitheater   The event will take place rain or moonlight, so dress appropriately.  Snacks are needed.  Please bring cookies, brownies and other finger foods to the library this Friday anytime from 9-5:30 - and no, they need not be homemade!

Check out our new book club sets for your next discussion group meeting!  Each set contains eight books of the same title and must be checked out and returned to PCL in its entirety.  These great picks are PAGETURNER approved by our very own Carol Olson!

BINGO!  PCL’s Cathy Adams and Mary Morgan host another evening of our favorite game at 6:30 November 8 for the grown-ups.  Join them in the cafeteria for their very own version of PEANUTS BINGO.  Celebrate cartoonist Charles Schultz birthday with themed snacks and unique game moves.  Dress as your favorite Peanuts character to win a prize for best costume!  RSVP by November 6.

 Owlsome Teens  Teens and preteens create awesome owl ornaments from slices of log, perfect for fall decoration November 12 at 6 PM.  No fee, but please let us know you are coming.  Pizza and pop too!

Tickets are available in the school office for PTO's Boots and Bling Fundraiser November 10 at Bewitched Farms.. The evening includes food, line dancing, a silent auction and cash bar.  Funds earned benefit Old Mission Peninsula School.

The forest trail we follow for the Pumpkin Walk is lit by over 200 pumpkins.  The kids here at OMPS carve them expertly, but the gutting is a sight to behold.  Using a power drill and special bit, a pumpkin is emptied in seconds by parent volunteers.  Many thanks to Cory Holman for donating ALL of this year's pumpkins!
The average Halloween pumpkin weighs between 12 and 18 pounds.  The largest pumpkin ever measured, however, was grown by Canadian Norm Craven in 1993.  The mammoth fruit weighed 836 pounds.  He also grew the largest rutabaga,but that doesn't seem to fit the theme here, even if the very first jack o'lanterns in Celtic lands were actually carved turnips.  In any case, Witch  Wendy will be watching for you at our Pumpkin Walk this Saturday!

Happy Halloween!  Witch Wendy (er, Vicki!)  10/23/18

Song of the Witches: “Double, double toil and trouble”

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.
